Monster Hunter World Gem Farming

Bob Marley’s favorite creature in Monster Hunter World is back and bigger than ever. Literally. Let’s just say that, this Great Jagras is what today’s young ‘uns would call a “thicc boi.”

Bronze rewards cannot drop gems, so for gem-farming these are completely useless. The best investigations for gems are going to be the 2 gold + 2 silver investigations. Oh, and of course for efficiency purposes, the investigation should not have multiple monsters, only the one whose gem.

On top of that, “The Greatest Jagras” event quest is also your ticket to a boat-load of feystones and decorations. We’re talking up to 30 pickups on the field plus a few more extra via quest rewards.

To maximize your feystone haul, I’ve put together some tips based on my first day of farming the event. Here’s a rundown of things that you should know when tackling the Greatest Jagras.

Facing the big boi

“The Greatest Jagras” is a limited-time event quest that debuted on Jan. 25, 2019 as part of the Monster Hunter World Appreciation Festival. In this hunt, you face a ginormous Jagras that’s super massive and hits like a truck. If a truck had scales. And dreadlocks.

How big is the so-called Greatest Jagras? Big enough to make the Deviljho that shows up in the hunt look ordinary. What’s more, this Great Jagras can actually beat Deviljho in a fight and send it away scurrying with its pickle tail tucked between its legs. It’s that strong.

The massive size means its attacks cover more ground, making it deceptively deadly. It also gains some new moves, including a ground pound that causes tremors that hold you in place without tremor resist. Add a more powerful roar and it’s easy to get stuck, then wombo-comboed to kitty cart Valhalla if you’re not careful. If you’re using a weapon with a shield or like guard-pointingmonster attacks, note that the Greatest Jagras’ more powerful attacks can still shave a chunk of your health depending on your loadout. My main advice is to avoid standing in front of the monster. Just picture a looooong imaginary cone, which you'll want to stay away from as much as possible because that's where its dangerous attacks will hit you. When in doubt, just roll toward its hind legs when the monster starts lunging or raising its front paw. Unless it's doing a tail swipe, the area where its back legs are is usually a safe spot

In addition to its basic moves, eating an Aptonoth allows the Greatest Jagras to launch a massive puke attack that covers a lot of ground in front of it. This can deal serious damage that can potentially one-shot you. That being said, you’ll want to encourage the Greatest Jagras to eat and puke as much as possible because this is your ticket to a torrential downpour of decorations.

Barfing beast

Every time the Greatest Jagras barfs out meat and carcass, it also pukes out a bunch of Great Jagras Materials. Pick them up and you’ll notice that they are actually feystones!

The bulk of these comprises Mysterious Feystones and Glowing Feystones. However, there’s also a slight chance that the monster will give you Worn Feystones and Warped Feystones, which can yield those oh-so-rare decorations such as Attack and Mind’s Eye jewels.

As such, your goal is to induce the Greatest Jagras to barf as many times as possible until you pick up the maximum number of materials that the mission will allow you.

Fattening it up

The easiest way to fatten up the Greatest Jagras is to make it eat other animals. The monster will always start the mission, for example, by heading to the Aptonoth herd just outside the southwest camp and chowing down on one of them.

When he does, make sure not to interrupt him. Just let him swallow down the poor creature until he fattens up and starts to walk away. At his point you can:

Flash pod it: This prevents the Greatest Jagras from going to the cramped part of the forest, which can make fighting him a bit more tricky. Also, I don’t know if it’s just my imagination but flashing the monster when it’s fattened up seems to make it puke more often. At this point, I usually just start picking stuff up. You can start attacking him if you want but I’ve seen the materials disappear if I wait too long so I just start picking them up to be safe. This also assures that you get the decorations even if you fail the mission.

About halfway through, however, you’ll want to switch to attacking and topple him while he’s fat. Not only does this give you a huge window to attack the monster, Greatest Jagras will also start puking feystones while it’s down on the ground as you smack it around. Another nice thing about this is that the feystones will be packed into one spot in front of his head so they are much easier to gather. Lockdown rapidweaver serial. Once it stands up again, the Greatest Jagras will return to its skinny state.

By the way, the phase where the Greatest Jagras fattens up is also when I usually wear my..

Temporal Mantle: I’ve seen many a hunter cart while picking up feystones because they get bum rushed or puked at by the Greatest Jagras. Wearing the mantle ensures that you can pick all that stuff up with no worries. Even if you decide to pick stuff up after he leaves, the Temporal Mantle also allows you to attack the monster safely while it’s in the area. After it leaves, you have a couple of decisions to make.

Leave or stay? Since you get to keep the stuff you’ve picked up, I’ve seen folks quit the mission after the first gather. The idea is that this saves the most time, allowing folks to claim their stones and repeat the cycle after just a few minutes. If you do this, make sure to just attempt the mission solo as this is a great inconvenience to players who decide to stay and finish the mission.

Personally, I stay because the mission rewards appear to have a higher chance of netting you extra Worn and Warped feystones, which is what you need for a chance at those rarer decorations. After the initial area, Greatest Jagras will usually make its way near the beach, where it’ll park itself under a tree trap. If it gets hungry while you’re battling it in this area, it will make its way down the shore and eat one of the Kestodon. Wait for it to fatten up and flash pod it again to make it puke its heart out. You should be able to deal enough damage in this area to make the monster limp away. Gather any Great Jagras Materials left on the field, and then capture it. (You can try killing it, too, but if it makes it to its cave, fighting a ginormous Great Jagras in that tiny spot can be a pain).

Final thoughts

Another way to fatten up the Greatest Jagras is to let it gorge on you. I discovered this by accident when it tackled me and another hunter next to me during one hunt and proceeded to feast on us while we were pinned to the ground. The downside was that both of us carted in the process. I’m not sure if you could flash it before you bite the dust as I was too surprised to try.

I also read somewhere online that you could feed it drugged meat to make it fat again. I haven’t tested this myself though, so I haven’t had a chance to verify it.

Anyway, those are my quick tips for making the most out of “The Greatest Jagras” hunt. It's definitely a great mission for feystone farming, whether you're trying to expand your deco collection and aiming for duplicates of common jewels or going for some rare ones. Hope the guide helps and good luck in farming the beast!
