Arx Fatalis is one of Those Games I Will Go Back To and Finish One of These Days. When it first came out, my computer really wasn't up to the task, and still I have great memories of the time spent exploring the underground in glorious 10 or so fps. And it really felt like I was exploring a world, not just playing in one.I regularly remember one of the early locations - an eerie-feeling, too quiet fortress, full of remains of a fight, with diaries talking about the effort to hold on despite overwhelming enemy numbers, and all the defenders dead.

I don't know if there was a related quest or any story reason to actually go there; I think it just stood there as a place to search and learn a bit more about the people of the underground. A lot of the design was like that - places to explore, stories to learn.

Oddly, Arx Fatalis is the only game that I've gone through the runaround of having it permanently removed from my Steam library. I bought it in the first place because its magic system seemed cool, but when I got the game it turned out to run like a slideshow on a computer that severely overpowered the minimum sysreqs. Turned out there was a known issue that ruined its performance with certain graphics cards.After a while they actually fixed that issue in a patch, for which I give them credit. But after I gained the ability to actually play the game I actually wished it had stayed broken. I loved Arx Fatalis when I played it, even though the setting was very brown (if very interesting), as Apis Rex mentions, and the game was clearly fairly low budget.

The story was very solid, and the magic system was very good (once you got used to the actual patterns for the spells). It had the added bonus of making reverse spells immediately castable by reversing the order of the signs (so, reversing a 'heal' spell would give you a life leech field, for example).Overall, an unknown classic of a game that's well worth putting some effort into.
